"and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."
Colossians 3:10
Pondering this verse today and looking up the meaning of words.
The word for renew in this passage also means to renovate. I thought about what happens when I renovate. I take out the old to make room for the new.
On the corner of Main Street, Bar Harbor, there is renovation going on. They completely tore down a set of buildings that have been there as long as I can remember. It looks cluttered with equipment necessary for getting the job done, muddy, unfinished. Yet there is a sense of wonder and excitement. What is coming next? What are they making room for? I am positive they have a goal in mind, an image that someone has given them. I don't have that inside information.
It's the same with our lives. Renovation can be messy, slow, and puzzling. The word "knowledge" carries the idea of a mark, a discerning. In other words there is a specific plan, an image.
The Creator knows what that is and He has deposited it in us. Sometimes He has to move in the equipment to eliminate old stuff. He has an end goal in mind.
Always good.
It's not always easy to trust the process.
Learning to trust the Creator.

This is so insightful and so deeply true. Renovation is always messy -- before you get to the finished product. When we renovate ourselves it is incredibly messy and cluttered and looks like it will never "be" anything. The real joy of renovating ourselves is that we are never a "finished product" -- we continue to tweak and move and rearrange throughout our lives. I loved being able to think on this with you this morning!
